Modern Gutter Styles: Your Gutters Shouldn’t Be an Afterthought
When you think about the exterior of a home, gutters occupy an interesting place in the trades.
For many roofing and siding companies, gutters are a secondary service. The roof or siding is the main course, and gutters are the french fries on the side. They’re something that can be added to the project because the homeowner needs them.
At NorthStar Seamless Gutters, it’s the opposite.
Gutters are the main course.
They’re what we do. They’re what we’ve spent 25 years in the gutter industry learning, installing, refining, and thinking about. And when you spend that much time focused on one trade, you start looking at gutters very differently.

Gutters Have a Bigger Job Than Most People Realize
A gutter system might look relatively simple from the ground. Water comes off the roof, enters the gutter, travels through the downspout, and disappears.
But what that system is accomplishing is incredibly important.
Every time it rains, your roof collects an enormous amount of water and sends it toward the edges of your home. Your gutter system is responsible for intercepting that water and directing it where you want it to go.
Without proper water management, that water can end up where you absolutely don’t want it: around the foundation, against siding, near soffit and fascia, or eventually making its way into a basement.
Water is an incredibly destructive natural force. A properly designed gutter and downspout system gives that water a controlled path away from the home.
That’s why we don’t look at gutters as an accessory.
They’re part of the home’s water-management system.
Why Does Almost Every House Have K-Style Gutters?
Take a drive through Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Altoona, or almost any community in Western Wisconsin and look at the gutters.

Chances are, you’re going to see K-style.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with that. We install K-style gutters ourselves, and they continue to make up a significant part of the gutter industry.
But here’s the interesting part:
Most homeowners don’t realize they have another choice.
K-style became popular in part because its decorative face resembles the traditional architectural profiles found in crown molding. The familiar curved profile is closely associated with the ogee shape found in classical trim and molding.
That aesthetic made sense when decorative molding was everywhere.
But home design has changed.
Our Homes Changed. Why Didn’t Our Gutters?
Look at a modern kitchen countertop.
How many new countertops are being installed with an ornate Roman ogee edge?
Compare that with the number featuring clean, straight, squared-off profiles.
Modern architecture has increasingly moved toward simpler lines and cleaner profiles. You can see it in countertops, cabinetry, windows, siding, trim, doors, and virtually every other part of the home.
Yet when it comes time to install gutters, homeowners are often presented with exactly one option:
K-style.
Not necessarily because it’s the only profile appropriate for the house.
Sometimes it’s simply the only profile the installer produces.
There are entire gutter companies built around one machine and one gutter profile. If that’s all a company manufactures, that’s naturally what every homeowner gets.
We decided to approach the trade differently.
Gutters Can Actually Add Character to a Home
At NorthStar Seamless Gutters, we believe the gutter should complement the architecture rather than simply hang from it.
That’s why we offer multiple gutter profiles.
K-Style Gutters
There’s a reason K-style has been the industry standard for decades. It’s familiar, functional, versatile, and works beautifully on many homes.
We’re not trying to eliminate K-style. We simply don’t believe it should be your only choice.
NorthStar Straight Face Gutters

Our NorthStar Straight Face profile offers a cleaner, flatter appearance than traditional K-style.
Instead of the familiar crown-molding-inspired face, Straight Face creates a more streamlined architectural line along the fascia.
For homeowners looking for a clean or contemporary exterior, the difference can be dramatic.
We also offer variations of our Straight Face profile, including leaf-rib detailing, giving homeowners another way to add subtle character to the gutter itself.
Half-Round Gutters
Then there’s one of the oldest and most timeless gutter profiles available: Half-Round.
Half-Round gutters have an entirely different personality.
They’re particularly beautiful on homes where architectural character matters, including many of the historic and distinctive homes found throughout Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, and the Chippewa Valley.
Rather than trying to hide the gutter, Half-Round can become part of the home’s exterior design.

Box Gutters
We’re also expanding our capabilities into box-style gutter profiles, adding another clean, architectural option to the systems we’re able to produce.
That means homeowners, builders, remodelers, and designers will have even more flexibility when deciding what belongs on a particular home.
And that’s really the point.

The Gutter Should Fit the House
We don’t believe every house should automatically receive the same gutter simply because that’s what has always been done.
A historic home in Eau Claire may call for something completely different than a new contemporary build.
A farmhouse may look fantastic with Half-Round.
Another home might be perfect for K-style.
A modern exterior might benefit tremendously from the clean lines of Straight Face or a box-style profile.
The question shouldn’t simply be:
“What color gutters do you want?”
It can also be:
“What gutter actually belongs on this house?”
That’s a much more interesting conversation.
More Options Don’t Have to Mean Unaffordable
There’s also a misconception that stepping outside the standard K-style gutter automatically means stepping into an entirely different price category.
That isn’t necessarily the case.
At NorthStar, our goal is to offer homeowners fair, competitive pricing across our gutter options while giving them access to profiles they may not have even known were available. But, specialty doesn’t have to mean unreasonable.
It means having choices.
25 Years Focused on the Gutter Trade
Ultimately, the profiles are only part of what makes a gutter system work.
The craftsmanship behind them matters even more.
Pitch matters. Water flow matters. Downspout placement matters. Outlets matter. Fastening matters. Miters matter. Understanding the fascia and roofline matters.
The little details add up.
That’s why we’re proud to be a company that specializes in gutters.
For 25 years, Chad has worked in the gutter industry, developing the knowledge and techniques that now go into NorthStar installations throughout Western Wisconsin.
We’re passionate about this trade because we’ve seen what happens when gutters are treated like an afterthought.
We’d rather treat them like what they actually are:
An important part of protecting your home and an opportunity to make it look better at the same time.
If you’re considering new seamless gutters in Eau Claire, Chippewa Falls, Altoona, Menomonie, or anywhere throughout the Chippewa Valley and Western Wisconsin, don’t assume K-style is your only option.
Take a look at what’s possible.
K-Style. Straight Face. Half-Round. Box profiles. Different details. Different looks. One important job: controlling water and protecting your home.
At NorthStar Seamless Gutters, gutters aren’t the side dish.
They’re the main course.
